Thornton police say five people have died and four others have been injured in a three-vehicle crash.

Police tell Denver's KUSA-TV that the crash happened at about 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the north-Denver suburb.

Police say a Ford Expedition headed south was driving erratically and crossed over the median into the northbound lanes and into an intersection where it hit a Mazda sedan. The SUV went airborne and the car ran into a store.

Police say the Ford landed on top of a pickup truck. All five people in the truck were killed.

Four people were hospitalized, including two juveniles.

Officer Matt Barnes says investigators are trying to determine when led up to the crash.

Police did not immediately respond to Associated Press phone call and email requests for comment.
