Authorities in northern Virginia say an officer shot a man who approached carrying a knife during a call for a disturbance involving the man and his mother.

Prince William County police say officers were called to a home in Woodbridge on Monday evening for a report of a domestic disturbance. While an officer spoke to the mother, police say the woman's 25-year-old son approached with a knife and the officer fired, striking him in the upper body.

Police say the man was flown to a hospital with injuries that are not thought to be life-threatening. The officer and mother sustained minor non-gunshot injuries and were also taken to a hospital. Details about the races of the people involved were not immediately available.
