Authorities say a police officer has been shot to death in an upstate New York village, and the shooting suspect has also died.

Binghamton Police Chief Joseph Zikuski tells local media that an officer with the Johnson City Police Department was fatally shot around 7 a.m. Monday. Zikuski says a suspect taken to a hospital for surgery has also died.

Police remain at the scene of the shooting. Police bomb squads were deployed to an area outside UHS Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City, where the suspect was taken.

No other details have been released. Police have scheduled a press conference for 2 p.m.

Zikuski serves as police chief for Binghamton and Johnson City, a village of 16,000 just west of Binghamton.
