Police say an off-duty officer investigating the sound of gunshots in northwest Washington fired his gun when a person pointed a weapon in his direction.

Police announced in a statement Sunday that the officer heard gunshots nearby Saturday evening and spotted someone getting into a white vehicle. He identified himself as an officer, and police say the person pointed a weapon toward him, prompting the officer to fire.

The person fled and police say a white vehicle later left two people with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds at a hospital. Police say it's not clear whether they were shot by the officer or during the initial shooting, but one, 21-year-old Curtis Fowler, was arrested for assault on a police officer while armed.

Metropolitan Police Department detectives and Internal Affairs Division agents are investigating.
