Officials say an off-duty Indianapolis police officer shot a detective investigating a reported domestic violence incident involving the officer and his estranged wife. The off-duty officer fled to Ohio before being taken into custody.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Major Rich Riddle says a domestic incident was reported at about 8 p.m. Friday. While a detective was at the apartment to investigate, the off-duty officer returned at about 10 p.m. and began shooting, striking the detective at least once. The detective returned fire, but didn't hit the off-duty officer.

Authorities say the detective was shot at least once in the elbow and taken to Methodist Hospital. He is expected to survive.

The off-duty officer fled the scene. Riddle says police tracked the man to Cincinnati, Ohio, where he was taken into custody without incident.

Officials didn't immediately identify the off-duty officer or detective.

Biddle says the off-duty officer will be suspended without pay, pending termination from the police department.
