Authorities say a Florida man who claimed he found an abandoned newborn wrapped in newspaper outside a convenience store lied, and the baby actually belongs to his girlfriend.

Ralph Garlick Jr. was charged Monday with knowingly giving false information to law enforcement and resisting an officer without violence.

Volusia County Sheriff's deputies say the 53-year-old originally said he found the baby after hearing her cry, and identified himself using his dead brother's name.

They say that under further questioning, Garlick admitted the baby belonged to his 34-year-old girlfriend, although he isn't the father.

Authorities say Garlick told them his girlfriend didn't want the newborn and that he was trying to find a safe place for her.
