Police are in a standoff with an armed suspect disguised as a film character who is holed up inside an Office Depot store in northern California.

Police tell the Oakland Tribune that four people had been held hostage late Friday but were released unharmed.

The Oakland police dispatch office told The Associated Press early Saturday that the standoff was still going on, but declined to say anything regarding hostages.

The office said numerous officers were at the scene and there have been no injuries.

Police say they first responded shortly before 10 p.m. Friday to check on a report that the Emeryville store had been left open and discovered the presence of the suspect.

Streets in the area were closed off the parking lots that surround the cluster of large stores on the Emeryville-Oakland border.

The Tribune says police described the suspect as wearing a mask from the action film "V for Vendetta" and armed with a handgun.
