LOWER TOWNSHIP, N.J.-- Authorities in southern New Jersey say a police officer escaped serious injury when his cruiser was struck by a suspected drunken driver who then fled the scene but was injured in a subsequent crash.

Lower Township police tell The Press of Atlantic City that Cpl. Kevin Boyle was northbound on Bayshore Road when a vehicle driven by William Lowe Jr. of Woodbine jumped a curb around 2:25 a.m. Saturday.

Lowe's vehicle struck Boyle's cruiser, causing front end damage and leaving Boyle with neck and back injuries. Other officers then briefly pursued the vehicle before Lowe lost control and his car overturned.

Lowe sustained a head injury and was being treated at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City. Boyle was taken a hospital for treatment and was later released.
