A drunk driver plowed into a police car at a traffic stop in northeast Louisiana early Sunday, killing one officer and injuring two others, Louisiana State Police said.

The wreck occurred on Interstate 55 in the Ouachita Parish town of Sterlington, about 220 miles northwest of New Orleans.

Sterlington Officer David Elahi was standing behind his car, interviewing someone who had been stopped, when an SUV hit him and his car, Trooper Michael Reichardt said in a news release.

Tracy Govan, 44, of Monroe was arrested on charges including vehicular homicide and vehicular negligent injury — killing or injuring someone by driving while drunk, Reichardt said.

It was not clear whether Govan had an attorney.

The other two officers sustained minor injuries, Reichardt said in an email.
