Police say they have charged a Connecticut doctor with second-degree manslaughter in the death of a patient who overdosed on medication he prescribed.

Ven Hsu, who specializes in pain management, also is charged with illegally supplying drugs. The 67-year-old physician posted $75,000 bail and is to be arraigned Aug. 3 in Waterbury Superior Court.

Waterbury police say they began investigating after a 35-year-old female patient of Hsu's died in Waterbury in April 2009 after overdosing on prescription drugs.

Police say investigators determined that the West Hartford doctor over-prescribed pain medications and muscle relaxers.

The Department of Public Health says Hsu is licensed and has no past disciplinary action.

It is not known if he has a lawyer. A woman who answered the phone at Hsu's office said he will not comment.
