Real cases, fake attorney: Woman accused of posing as lawyer
Karla Carbo reportedly stole the identity of a Utah lawyer and impersonated her at least three times
SALT LAKE CITY – Police in Utah say they've arrested a woman suspected of posing as a lawyer and negotiating a plea agreement with prosecutors.
Sheriff's Capt. Justin Martinez said Wednesday that investigators believe 29-year-old Karla Carbo impersonated an attorney at least three times over the last six months.
Martinez says Carbo was arrested on suspicion of fraud and identity theft Tuesday, a week after striking a plea deal on behalf of a client in Summit County.
Police say the plea caught the attention of Utah State Bar Association officials who reported Carbo had been using a legitimate attorney's name and bar number to represent clients without a license.
Martinez says Carbo's clients thought she was a legitimate attorney.
No attorney was listed for Carbo in court records Wednesday.
