Authorities say four high school football players were killed and four others were injured when a sport utility vehicle crashed on the Garden State Parkway in southern New Jersey.

State police say the SUV was carrying eight players from Mainland Regional High School in Linwood when it crashed Saturday in Egg Harbor Township.

Sgt. Julian Castellanos say the driver -- who was among those killed -- apparently lost control of the SUV, which overturned several times. Two people were ejected.

Authorities say the four surviving teens were being treated at hospitals for injuries that are not considered life-threatening. They say the teens range in age from 15 to 17 but wouldn't release their names.

It's unclear where the students were coming from or where they were going.

Officials at Mainland Regional High School didn't immediately return calls or emails from The Associated Press seeking comment.
