A Phoenix police officer is in extremely critical condition following a shooting that left a burglary suspect dead Wednesday.

Phoenix police Chief Joe Yahner didn’t release the officer’s name, but said he’s about 35 years old and a 12-year department veteran with a wife and two small children.

"He is in extremely critical condition and is fighting for his life," Yahner said.

The incident happened in Laveen after a man called 911 to report that his son allegedly was stealing guns from him. The officer responded and found the suspect in a vehicle and shots were exchanged.

The suspect was declared dead at the scene, police said. The police officer was taken by ambulance to St. Joseph’s Medical Center.

The suspect has yet to be identified.
