A Phoenix police officer is dead and another is in critical condition after a shootout that killed a man wanted on a felony warrant.

Phoenix Police Chief Daniel Garcia announced that one of the officers on the fugitive apprehension team died a few hours after the Monday afternoon shooting.

His name wasn't immediately released but Garcia says the man was a 21-year veteran of the department.

The other officer is a nine-year veteran. Garcia says that officer is fighting for his life.

The shootout occurred after the suspect fled in his car, caused a three-vehicle collision, then ran away before exchanging gunfire with officers outside a check cashing business.

Police say the suspect came around a corner with a gun and a third officer fatally shot the suspect.
