HAWTHORNE, Calif. – Two toddlers have fallen out of a Southern California apartment window and one is in critical condition.
Authorities were called to a building in an unincorporated area near the city of Hawthorne shortly before noon Tuesday.
Los Angeles County sheriff's Lt. Sergio Escobedo says the 2-year-olds — part of a set of triplets — were napping on a bed next to a louvred window in a second-story apartment when they apparently awakened and crawled through a gap left by missing window slats.
They fell onto the concrete below but were alert when authorities arrived.
County fire officials say one boy was taken to a hospital in critical condition and the other was treated for moderate injuries.
Escobedo says the children's parents and two other children were home at the time.
