Authorities in far northeast Ohio say a sheriff's deputy responding to a reported stabbing fatally shot a suspect who confronted officers with a gun.

A Friday statement from the sheriff's office says Lake County deputies were called to a Perry Township home Thursday night by a woman who said she'd been stabbed repeatedly. It says responders were met outside by an armed man who refused orders to drop the firearm, and a deputy fired when the suspect raised the gun.

The 54-year-old man was pronounced dead at a medical facility.

The sheriff's office says the 55-year-old woman who'd been stabbed in the chest and back was flown to a Cleveland hospital. No update on her condition was available early Friday.

Authorities planned a news conference to discuss what happened.
