Authorities say a county protective services officer breaking up an argument on a downtown Cleveland street shot a man wielding a sharp object.

A spokesman for the Cuyahoga County Sheriff's Office said the suspect held either a knife or a screwdriver when he lunged at the officer, who is assigned to the county courthouse and saw the argument from his car Monday morning.

The spokesman says the officer has been placed on paid administrative leave and the suspect was taken into custody after being treated for a leg wound.

The Cleveland police department is investigating.

The circumstances differed from earlier reports. Earlier Monday, a county spokesman confirmed incorrect media accounts that said a robbery suspect fired a shot at a sheriff's deputy and the deputy returned fire.

This story has been corrected to show the shooting involved a protective services officer breaking up an argument on a downtown Cleveland street and shooting a man wielding a sharp object, not a sheriff's deputy fired on a street robbery suspect.
