A Maryland sheriff's office says a deputy shot and wounded a man who lunged at her with a knife.

The Frederick County Sheriff's Office said in a statement that deputies were sent to a New Market home, where a 911 caller's son was acting strangely and may have been having a reaction to medication.

Officials say when Deputy Samantha Foland entered Tuesday, a man with a knife confronted her. Officials say Foland ordered him to drop the knife and when he lunged, she fired once, striking him in the hand and chest. Officials say the man is in stable condition at a hospital. Officials say a knife was found at the scene.

Foland is on routine administrative leave. Spokesman Maj. Tim Clarke says Foland and the wounded man are white.
