Georgia authorities are investigating after a city police officer was wounded by gunfire and a man he was chasing was fatally shot.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said in a Tuesday news release that Union City police officer Jerome Turner Jr. responded to a report of a fight just before 6 p.m. Monday. He notified 911 dispatch that he was chasing a man who had brandished a gun. The man was later identified as 19-year-old Veltavious Griggs.

Dispatch lost contact with Turner and additional officers were sent. The GBI says that when those officers arrived, they found both Turner and Griggs had been shot.

Griggs died at the scene. Turner was shot several times but was alert and talking. He underwent surgery and was in stable condition.
