Police in Nashville, Tennessee, say an officer shot and wounded an armed man who refused to drop his gun after firing several rounds outside a restaurant.

A statement from Metro Nashville police says 26-year-old Jordan Martel Agnew was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center after the confrontation Sunday night with Metro Police Sgt. Jeff Goodwin.

The statement says Goodwin confronted Agnew outside Uncle Bud's restaurant and ordered him to drop his weapon, but Agnew refused. Police say Goodwin fired to protect himself and restaurant patrons.

Police described Agnew as a disgruntled former worker and said it was his second trip to the restaurant Sunday armed with a gun.

Agnew is black. Goodwin is white. He is a 28-year veteran of the department.
