An off-duty NYPD cop shot a man after a group tried to rob the officer shouting, "he's a cop, shoot him," multiple news agencies reported.

The officer’s mother told NBC4 that he was video-chatting on the phone with his son while walking in the Bronx around 4 a.m. when three armed men jumped him.

The suspects saw the officer's badge when he emptied his pockets, and they shouted "shoot him, shoot him" in Spanish, sources tell The New York Post.

The officer, who was not identified, shot and wounded one of the men, who police said had a gun. The suspect was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital in stable condition, FOX5 reported.

The other two men fled and may be armed with a gun and knife.

The officer was not injured, but was taken to Bronx-Lebanon Hospital for ringing in his ears, according to FOX5.
