NEW YORK -- Police have arrested an armed man who was thwarted from robbing a Brooklyn beauty salon by an off-duty police officer who was getting her hair done.

Police identified the suspect as 19-year-old Winston Cox. He was arrested early Monday morning. Charges were pending.

They say the gunman entered Sabine's Hallway beauty salon on Franklin Avenue just before 6:30 p.m. Saturday and demanded cash and belongings from the customers.

Police say the 50-year-old off-duty officer identified herself as a police officer and ordered him to drop his gun, but the man shot at her and missed. Police say she returned fire, hitting him in the right arm and thigh. He fled on foot.

No injuries were reported inside the salon.
