SANTA ANA, Calif. -- An Orange County jury has determined a man was sane when he strangled his 82-year-old mother at her Laguna Woods home five years ago.

The same panel that convicted 52-year-old Ethan Rosenfeld of first-degree murder on May 5 found Thursday that he was legally sane at the time of the crime.

Rosenfeld had pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.

Prosecutors say Rosenfeld strangled his mother in May 2005, placed her body in her bed, crossed her arms across her chest and wrapped her body in a sheet.

He then took his mother's credit card and tried to purchase some items before he returned home and called 911, claiming he found his mother dead.

Rosenfeld faces 25 years to life in prison.
