NEW YORK – The New York City police department wants to expand the use of stun guns to subdue emotionally disturbed people and other suspects who resist arrest.
Police officials said Wednesday that preliminary plans call for 450 more officers to carry the electroshock weapons.
The details were revealed a day after officers shot and killed an armed man with mental problems at a Jewish center in Brooklyn.
The proposal is part of a broader review of use of force at the nation's largest police department in the wake of the chokehold death of Eric Garner, whose arrest was caught on videotape. A grand jury decision not to indict any officers touched off a wave of protests last week.
