Authorities say a New York City man has been arrested after his 11-year-old grandson took his loaded handgun to school in his backpack.

Police said Wednesday that 54-year-old Kenneth Miley was charged with criminal possession of a weapon and reckless endangerment. Investigators say officers were called to Public School 40 in Queens after a pistol was found in the fifth-grader's backpack.

Police say the gun belonged to Miley and was kept in his bedroom.

The Daily News reports that Richard Kopacz, Miley's attorney, said at his arraignment that the gun doesn't belong to his client and was found in the backyard.

It's unclear why the boy brought the gun to school.
