NEW YORK – Federal lawmakers from New York and New Jersey are promoting legislation that would restrict ammunition sales over the Internet and by mail.
U.S. Rep. Carolyn McCarthy of New York and U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey discussed their Stop Online Ammunition Sales Act at a news conference Monday outside Manhattan's City Hall.
Only licensed dealers would be allowed to sell ammunition. They would have to report any sale of more than 1,000 rounds to an unlicensed person.
It also would require buyers who aren't licensed dealers to show photo ID.
The legislation was spurred by the Colorado movie theater shooting rampage that killed 12 people this month.
The Democratic lawmakers say Americans "are sick and tired of the ease with which criminals can now anonymously stockpile for mass murder."
