PORTLAND, Maine – A Norwegian man charged with making threats against Maine police officers via email and Twitter will be detained until at least next week.
Twenty-eight-year-old Espen Brungodt of Norway appeared in U.S. District Court in Portland on Thursday. He was arrested Wednesday and charged with making threatening interstate communications.
A judge told Brungodt he will face a probable cause hearing and a bail hearing on Aug. 9. He will be held in jail until then.
The Portland Press Herald reported Wednesday that it received a threatening email from someone who said it was "time for more police to die." The email sender threatened to "shoot and kill" officers.
A lawyer has been appointed for Brungodt, who did not enter a plea.
Brungodt faces five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
