Authorities in upstate New York are trying to determine the source of nine brains that reportedly turned up along a village street.

One of the brains was analyzed by a local veterinarian in St Lawrence County, who determined it was likely from a dog, according to WWNY TV 7. The veterinarian determined the brain had been surgically removed and preserved in formaldehyde.

But a chemistry professor at Clarkson University told North Country Now the specimen probably came from a sheep, not a dog.

Police in Gouverneur told local media the nine brains are believed to have been part of a collection for educational or research purposes. No criminal activity is suspected, police said.
