GAINESVILLE, Ga. – A black couple is suing their former neighbor citing a civil rights-era law more commonly used against discriminatory landlords.
Gregory and Sophia Bonds say the white neighbor, Roy Turner Jr., began yelling threats and racial slurs the day they moved in next door in the north Georgia city of Gainesville.
They say Turner often hurled insults while on the job with the city's solid waste department. The lawsuit against Turner and the city says officials failed to curb those actions, making the city liable.
They're suing under state and federal fair housing statutes that protect against threats, intimidation and interference with a person's right to live in a home free of discrimination.
Turner says he never threatened anyone. The city's mayor says he can't comment on pending litigation.
