NFL legend Joe Namath aids search for boys, 14, missing off Florida

NFL legend Joe Namath joined the search Sunday for two 14-year-old South Florida boys who disappeared while boating in the Atlantic Ocean Friday.

The Coast Guard said a boat belonging to the boys had been found about 67 miles off Ponce de Leon Inlet in Volusia County. Petty Officer Steve Lehman said the boat was found capsized and neither boy was in or around the boat.

Namath appealed to anyone who may have information on the location of the boys, Austin Stephanos and Perry Cohen, to please come forward.

“We’re all praying,” Namath said at a press conference Sunday in Tequesta, Fla., with the families of the boys and the Coast Guard.

“We got a lot of people out on the water and in the air looking for them,” the Hall of Famer said. “We’ll stay out there until we find them.”

Namath is offering a $100,000 reward in the search. He is a neighbor of one of the boys, Perry.

Authorities say Austin and Stephanos and Perry Cohen did not return as scheduled Friday from a fishing trip. The pair was last seen buying fuel Friday afternoon in the Jupiter area.

The teens had been fishing from a 19-foot vessel with a single engine center console.

Coast Guard air and sea search-and-rescue crews have covered more than 14,000 nautical square miles, including waters as far north as Melbourne.

The crews intend to cover another 11,000 nautical square miles Sunday.
