NEW YORK – New York City officials say a $450,000 settlement has been reached in the civil rights lawsuit filed by a former Riker Island inmate who was tied up and beaten by correctional officers.
The New York Times reports (http://nyti.ms/1fWz8Nb ) Robert Hinton sustained a broken nose, fractured vertebra and bleeding from his mouth in the April 2012 incident. Hinton was being held in a solitary confinement unit for men with mental illness.
A New York City Law Department spokesman said the settlement was in the city's best interest. He also stated that the city does not admit any wrongdoing in the case and expected contributions from the Rikers Island employees who were terminated.
Correction Commissioner Joseph Ponte fired a captain and five officers earlier this year in relation to Hinton's case.
