A New York Fire Department spokesman says three of five people pulled from a vehicle submerged in a New York City creek have died, and one remains critically injured.

The spokesman says units responded to a call of a car in Steinway Creek in the Astoria neighborhood of Queens around 10:35 p.m. Friday. He says rescue divers pulled five people from the vehicle.

He says three of the injured suffered cardiac arrest and were pronounced dead at Elmhurst Hospital Center. One person taken to Mount Sinai Queens was in critical condition. The fifth person, believed to have been the driver, was in stable condition at Elmhurst.

It wasn't immediately clear how the vehicle became submerged.

The accident occurred on a dead-end street next to the creek in an industrial neighborhood.
