A New Jersey man who had an arsenal of swords and knives in his home attacked his father with a lamp Tuesday morning before barricading himself and engaging in a standoff with cops.

A neighbor saw the 49-year-old man hit his father with the object outside their North Brunswick home at around 1:30am, the Star-Ledger reported.

When police arrived on the scene and took the father away, the unidentified man locked himself in his room, North Brunswick Police Capt. Roger Reinson said.

The Middlesex County Special Operations Response Team (SORT) and the county hostage negotiator arrived at the home, but the man refused to come out.

SORT officers finally entered the home at 5:00am and took the suspect into custody, Reinson said. Inside, they found several knives and swords.

The son was charged with simple assault, obstruction of administrative law and hindering apprehension, according to Reinson. He was ordered held on $2,500 bail.

His father suffered lacerations to his face from the lamp attack but refused medical treatment.
