National Guard called to North Logan after woman attempts suicide with poisonous ricin

NORTH LOGAN, Utah – More than a dozen members of the Utah National Guard were heading to North Logan after authorities say a woman tried to commit suicide there with highly toxic ricin.

Cache County officials say the incident was first reported about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday.

North Park police say after the suicide attempt the woman called police, who brought in hazardous materials crews.

KSL reports the woman and a family that was living upstairs from her were taken to the hospital, but the family was later released.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention describes ricin as a potentially deadly poison that occurs naturally in castor beans.
