Nearly 100 sharks washed up on an Alabama beach Saturday, leaving the locals and vacationers stunned.

According to WKRG-TV, close to 100 bull sharks washed ashore on the Mobile Bay beach and it left the community with more questions than answers.

Sabrina Rios told the station that her and her family was staying in Mobile on vacation when they came across the dead sharks on the beach. She said they also found a net with nearly 40 sharks caught inside.

“It definitely caught our attention because I know that that is illegal and you shouldn’t be doing that. We just didn’t know what to do about it,” she said.

Rios added that the smell was too much to handle and that some others in the area tried to bury as many as possible.

Marine Resources Division and the Dauphin Island Sea Lab officials are investigating the incident. The sharks’ cause of death remains unknown and it’s still unclear how they got onto the beach.

A necropsy is expected to be conducted Tuesday.
