MINEOLA, N.Y. – More than 500 callers have expressed interest in caring for a newborn baby girl who was surrendered on Thanksgiving Day morning at a suburban New York fire station.
The president of the Long Island-based AMT Children of Hope Foundation says the baby is the 15th infant to be surrendered this year in the New York area.
Timothy Jaccard (Juh-card) says that's about average for the organization.
The child was surrendered under a state law that allows a parent to anonymously bring an infant to a safe haven, including a firehouse or police station. Jaccard says a woman believed to be the child's mother called him and made arrangements to surrender the child.
The child will be placed with a family already certified to provide foster care.
