BILLINGS, Mont. – A Montana judge has issued a six-month suspended sentence and ordered more than $7,500 in fines and restitution for a hitchhiker who falsely claimed to be the victim of a drive-by shooting.
Ray Dolin's story garnered international attention after the struggling photographer shot himself in the arm in rural Valley County last year, then stuck with the drive-by claim even after a Washington state man was arrested and jailed.
Prosecutor Nick Murnion says Dolin was apologetic during his sentencing on Monday before Judge John McKeon in Glasgow. The struggling photographer from West Virginia had earlier pleaded guilty to a felony count of tampering with evidence and two misdemeanor charges.
Murnion says Dolin must continue receiving mental health treatment as part of his sentencing. He's now living in Michigan.
