NEW YORK – The mother of a 6-year-old boy who was stabbed to death in a public housing elevator is suing New York City. She says officials carelessly left a long-broken front door unfixed and surveillance cameras uninstalled.
Prince Joshua "P.J." Avitto's mother is seeking unspecified damages in a lawsuit filed Thursday in Brooklyn.
A spokeswoman for Mayor Bill de Blasio (dih BLAH'-zee-oh) calls Prince's death tragic and says the city will review the suit. The New York City Housing Authority declined to comment.
Prince and 7-year-old friend Mikayla Capers were attacked at Brooklyn's Boulevard Houses complex in June. Mikayla was critically wounded but survived.
A recently released convict, Daniel St. Hubert, has pleaded not guilty. He has a history of mental problems but has been found fit to stand trial in the stabbings.
