Officials say a north Mississippi deputy has been shot by a motorcyclist during a traffic stop but is expected to recover.

Authorities said Monday that the suspect fled, and they're looking for a black male driving a red speed bike with no license plate.

Monroe County Sheriff Cecil Cantrell says in a statement that Deputy Eric Sloan was shot about 3 a.m. Cantrell says Sloan had pulled over the motorcycle for speeding.

Cantrell says that when Sloan approached the motorcycle, the driver began shooting and hit Sloan in his protective vest, near the abdomen area.

Cantrell says Sloan is being treated at a hospital and is expected to make a full recovery. Officials have not released other details, including the deputy's race.
