MINNEAPOLIS – A Minnesota woman charged with providing support to al-Shabab is helping the federal government's case against two other women accused of helping the terrorist group.
Amina Mohamud Esse pleaded guilty in 2014, but her case records were not unsealed until Thursday. Prosecutors pushed to keep her case private as she provided information about ringleaders who organized payments to al-Shabab.
Records were released because the trial against two other women is to begin in Virginia on July 11.
Esse, who pleaded guilty to sending $500 intended for the group, was put on probation, banned from traveling outside Minnesota and required to submit for a mental health evaluation in exchange for her cooperation.
The case is among many involving terrorism recruitment and support in Minnesota, home to the nation's largest Somali population.
