MILWAUKEE – Several Milwaukee aldermen are pushing for police reforms after prosecutors declined to charge an officer who shot a man 14 times in a downtown park.
Five City Council members detailed a plan Tuesday that includes creating a community advisory panel and re-evaluating officers' diversity training. They also want officers equipped with body cameras, and monitoring of certain officers for violent tendencies.
The plan comes eight months after former officer Christopher Manney fatally shot 31-year-old Dontre Hamilton while responding to a call about a man sleeping in the park. Relatives say Hamilton had schizophrenia.
Manney, who is white, says Hamilton, who was black, resisted when he tried to frisk him, grabbed his police baton and hit him.
Manney was fired for initiating the pat-down. Local prosecutors cleared him of wrongdoing Monday.
