A Detroit-area teen is the first recipient of a Marquette University scholarship named after journalist James Foley.

School officials in Milwaukee will announce Wednesday on the anniversary of Foley's death that Jake Zelinski of Rochester Hills will receive the $8,000 scholarship. It will be given bi-annually and is renewable each year.

Foley was a 1996 graduate of Marquette. He was kidnapped by militants in 2012 in Syria while contributing video for news agencies. His videotaped beheading by Islamic State militants was posted online.

After his death, more than $320,000 was contributed to establish the scholarship.

The 18-year-old Zelinski graduated in May from the University of Detroit Jesuit High School. He plans to major in theater arts and digital media at Marquette.
