ATLANTA – Crews are packing a 190,000-pound truck onto a cargo plane so it can fly to Japan and pour water onto damaged nuclear reactors that are spewing radiation.
The pumps are among the world's largest. They were designed to pump concrete for new skyscrapers and bridges, but they have been refitted to spray cooling water on reactors at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant.
One of the world's largest aircrafts landed Friday afternoon at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport to pick up one of the massive pumps. The second pump is leaving from Los Angeles International Airport.
They are scheduled to fly to Japan on Saturday.
