Marine fighter jet crashes near Nevada air station, pilot hospitalized

A pilot was hospitalized Tuesday after his Marine fighter jet crashed in a remote area outside a Nevada air station.

A defense official told Fox News the F/A-18C Hornet crashed five miles east of Naval Air Station Fallon, located approximately 60 miles east of Carson City.

The official said the Navy pilot was able to parachute out of the aircraft. The extent of the pilot's injuries was not immediately clear.

The Nevada crash occurred less than a week after another Marine F/A-18C Hornet crashed in Southern California, killing the pilot. Both Marine jets came from the same squadron, VMFA-232.

In April, Fox News reported that only approximately 30 percent of the 276 F/A-18 Hornet strike fighters in the Marine Corps inventory were fit to fly, according to the Corps' own statistics.
