Three of last year's ten finalists will return for another shot at the National Geographic Bee.

The preliminary rounds are Monday, and the finals will be held on Wednesday, with the winner getting a $50,000 scholarship and other prizes. The bee has a game show-type format, and the questions and results can be unpredictable.

Last year, some contestants were tripped up by relatively easy questions about U.S. geography. Eleven-year-old Kapil Nathan and 13-year-old Nicholas Monahan both say they didn't expect questions about the United States. They've adjusted their study habits accordingly.

But all the competitors say there's luck involved in the geography bee because it's simply impossible to study everything.
