A man returning home from a local hospital with his sick father was shot dead during a home invasion and robbery in southeast Houston, KHOU-TV reported Monday.

The men had been at MD Anderson hospital, where the father was being treated for cancer.

When they arrived home around 10:15pm local time they were ambushed by two suspects, who forced them inside, authorities said.

A struggle ensued, and the father ran out the front door. His son, Salem al Mazrouei, 25, also attempted to run, but was shot an unknown number of times. He was taken to the hospital but was pronounced dead a short time later.

Authorities said the pair had been directly targeted by the thieves.
