LAKEWOOD, Calif. – Los Angeles County investigators are holding a man accused of beating to death a 74-year-old man in a Walmart with an aluminum baseball bat he grabbed in sporting goods.
Surveillance cameras captured Tuesday's attack.
Witnesses told KCAL-TV that a man who appeared to be homeless asked the victim for money and attacked when he refused. But sheriff's Lt. Eddie Hernandez says the attack appears to have been unprovoked and no words were exchanged.
The victim suffered head wounds and died at the scene. A 47-year-old man was detained outside the store. Their names were not released and authorities did not say whether the suspect had been formally arrested.
In August, police used beanbag rounds to subdue another incoherent man who brandished two knives in the same Walmart.
