A Maryland man is charged with assaulting a police officer who responded to a domestic violence call.

The Cumberland Police Department says in a statement that 30-year-old Jude Smith was arrested at his home Saturday night. Online court records do not show a defense attorney who might comment on the charges. A listed telephone number for Smith has been disconnected.

The man who called police told them Smith had become violent and grabbed his neck, so he pepper-sprayed him.

When officers arrived, police say Smith argued with them about the legality of the pepper spray, then struck an officer in the face and kicked the officer's chest.

Police say both Smith and the injured officer, both white, were treated at a local hospital and released.
