Authorities say a man and his mother used plumber's tape to keep an 11-year-old boy restrained for several hours at a time at a home in southwestern Michigan.

The Van Buren County sheriff's department says the 28-year-old man and his 46-year-old mother are being held on $1 million bond after being arraigned Wednesday on charges of torture and first-degree child abuse in District Court in South Haven.

The Herald-Palladium of St. Joseph reports the man is the boyfriend of the boy's mother.

Sheriff Dale Gribler says deputies found the boy walking alone on a road early Tuesday. According to Gribler, the boy told deputies he ran away from home in Geneva Township after being physically abused. He says the boy also was found to be extremely malnourished.
