Spartanburg County deputies have arrested a man they say left his assigned post in the Army in 2001 and never went back.

Joseph Champion was arrested Tuesday at the county maintenance shop where he works.

U.S. Army officials say Champion went missing from his assigned post in March 2001 and never returned.

The FBI called Spartanburg County authorities, who got in touch with Champion's wife. Deputies say she told them where he worked. County administrator Katherine Hubbard says Champion had been working as an auto mechanic since 2005.

Champion is being held at the county jail until he's transferred to federal custody. It wasn't known if he had a lawyer.
